This is a very personal design for the art collector Lothar- Guenther Buchheim and his private collections. The Fine Art Museum is integrated into the beautiful Bavarian landscape at the Starnberg lake, close to Munich. The picture of a “stranded boat” or “two villas”–not a temple–can be seen in the building. An Expressionist Art and Research Center with day lit galleries, green roofs, water reclamation, energy efficient with exacting climate control system.
The building has received significant awards for architectural design. According Buchheim´s dream folk art and academic works are placed beside each other as the Expressionists themselves had done in their studios. Fluid transitions lead from one part of the museum to another; shorter and longer round tours can be chosen via the two-story “spine” and also via a return route through the park. The building elements have been deliberately kept lean integrated into classic landscape: the trees, the lake and spatial variety, as well as the play of light and shadow, provide the appropriate context for the exhibited works.
